School websites offer numerous services to students, parents and potential students.

Website design for schools should be planned out before embarking on the development, just like any other websites development.

Feature to be included on a school website includes;  virtual tours, online classrooms, and access to library resources. Well-thought-out website design maximizes the utilization of your school website for the entire school community. There are no fixed rules for website design, but there are guidelines and concerns to address during the process.

1. List of different user groups for the website – Prospective students, parents and current students and staff all have different reasons for using the site. List what each group will want from the website. Consider the shortcuts for each group on a special page for them to collect.

2. Solicit input from students and faculty about them would like to see involved – This is especially useful if fact and not on the old side worked modernizing an older site because your audience can tell you something.

3. Integrate the school’s colors into the design – You can divide sections of the page, header or buttons.

4. Remember that students and faculty will visit the homepage often . Weigh the aesthetics of the page against the speed of downloading. The homepage may not be the best location for a campus or flash video slide show. Consider the descents of these features on a potential student page or “virtual tour”.

5. Use the three-click rule – This rule states that users reach the page they want in about three clicks. Digging through many pages frustrates users and can prevent them from finding required information.

6 Create a template and style sheet for departments to use when creating their own web pages – Many schools have each department maintaining their own pages, so it’s important that they match the style of the entire site.

7. Testing the website – Get feedback from students and faculty on how to easily navigate the site and how useful the information is. Even after introduction of the site feedback, be open. Remember that ultimately your school website exists, tailored to the needs of its users.

8 Updating the website frequently, and label all time-related information, such as: As school calendars, tuition diagrams and application deadlines, with the year (s) applies to. Of course, remove obsolete information immediately.
